I was commended by the Navy Frank Knox. I received the Navy Cross, which Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitiz, the commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet personally presented to me on board aircraft carrier USS Enterprise for his extraordinary courage in battle. Nimitiz said "This marks the first time in this conflict that sud high tribute has been made in the Pacific Fleet to a member of his race and I'm sure that the future will see others similarly honored for brave acts." I remember exactly what he said. I was so excited and proud of myself. I believed that I did excellent when we were attacked. Besides that Navy Cross I was entitled to the Purple Heart Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Becoming a Sailor has changed my life. I have traveled a lot since the attack I was reported to USS Indianapolis, then returned to the west coast of the United States. When I was assigned to the constructed USS Liscome Bay I was on board that escort carrier during Operation Galvanic, the seizure of Making and Tarawa Atolls in the Gilbert Islands. Liscome Bay's aircraft supported operations ashore for about a week. At 5:10 a.m., while cruising near Butaritari Island, a single torpedo from Japanese submarine I-175 struck the escort carrier near the stern. The aircraft bomb magazine detonated a few moments later, sinking the warship within minutes. I am hurt and I hope I will survive this...

I am the first African American hero of World War II, and I'm honored for my participation at Pearl Harbor.

I was attacked at the Pearl Harbor , it was unbelievable, I am still shaking. I'm dreaming about it every night since it happened. I was so shocked and terrified. I woke up that morning at 6am and was collecting laundry when the alarm went off. I headed for battle station, and found out that the torpedo damaged the AntiCraft Battery Magazine Amidship. I was very stunned and didn't know what to do, so when I realized that it was wrecked I went on deck and helped out the others in need. I was assigned to carry wounded Sailors to safer places where they couldn't be harmed or injured anymore. Me and others could have died because of this outrageous and unexpected attack. The ship captain was wounded so I helped an officer get him to greater safety also. I fired a machine gun during the battle, for the first time. And I wasn't even trained to do that. It wasn't hard. I just pulled the trigger and it worked fine. I had watched the others with these guns. I guess I fired it for about fifteen (15) minutes. I think I got one of those Jap Planes. They were diving pretty close to us. That day was so awesome and very fascinating but also very dangerous.

I was transferred to USS West Virginia. And I became the ship's heavyweight boxing champion. I am happy and proud of myself. Here, in West Virginia, it's very different and strange. So far, things have been going on very well. My new nick name is Dorie. My friends and shipmates call me that. I am temporary doing my duty aboard USS Nevada, now, at Secondary Battery Gunnery School I will be back at West Virginia, soon.

It's different being here, away from home, from family and from friends. I am training at the Naval Training Station in Norfolk, Virginia. I am assigned to the ammunition ship USS Pyro, and serving as a Mess Attendant. I am having a great time here. Me and me my friends are chilling and hanging out. We are having the time of our lives. The sun is shining very brightly and the temperature is high. Its very hot out here but all the fun will stop soon. We have training tomorrow. I will be an official sailor.
